Wednesday, 6/30/10 - Want to see sailing get some international recognition in main stream media? Let's keep these two teen aged girls sailing and in the spotlight.
Here's the pitch: Abby Sunderland and Jessica Watson double handing in the Barcelona World Race. Sponsors would line up and I think these two could make the trip. They wouldn't win, but they would most likely finish. Granted, an Open 60 is a lot of boat for two teenagers, but Lia Ditton managed with no problem and they have proven that they're up for a challenge. Sunderland knows the lay of the land from her Open 40 experience and they both seem to like each other. SOunds like a story worth covering to me...email reactions to info@xssailing.com

Wednesday, 6/30/10 - Everyone's starting strategy should be a combination of their regular routine and an awareness of the conditions. And while it's important for sailors to go through their pre-race routine (i.e. finding out which end of the line is favored, which side of the racecourse is favored, and how to balance the risks against the rewards in order to have the highest percentage start), it is just as critical to take into account current as well. Tuesday, 6/29/10 - In her first official press conference since her dramatic dismasting in the southern Indian Ocean, sixteen year old Abby Sunderland spoke of her arduous ordeal.
Sunderland described how she considered putting together a jury rig once her mast was snapped like a twig after getting rolled by what she continually emphasized was a rouge wave. She explained that she simply didn't have the necessary resources to make anything that would suffice. She also said that she kept the downed mast along side the boat as it acted like a sea anchor, but there came a point where she felt it might be a danger and cut it loose.
The teenage sailor was very specific when describing the incident, stating that the storm itself was not responsible for her accident, in fact, conditions were abating. It seemed important to her that people understand that this enormous wave from out of nowhere pummeled her while she was abeam to it.
When asked about the media spotlight that's been burning her parents on a daily basis, Sunderland, clearly indignant, explained that she believes many have reported the story very unfairly omitting pertinent facts at every turn and some online forums have been savage in their ill-informed attacks.
Of the future, Sunderland had no immediate plans but to perhaps get some solid rest and maybe a driver's license, although she admitted that she doesn't think driving is all that safe...

Tuesday, 6/29/10 - Beach cats, have made great strides in the past 20 years and have gained popularity world wide, yet San Francisco Bay has remained a tad bit of a black hole for the twin hull set. Cold water, adverse currents, large commercial traffic and a lack of user friendly, white sand beaches seemingly the primary culprits. Alameda’s Crowne Beach and Coyote Point have held several Hobie-Cat event in recent years, but the central bay has remained of limits. Sail World has the rest of the story.
