Story Example:

Monday - May 14 2007 - 1247 PST - Chicago Mac Race 2005. This was our first race ever on our new R33 cat - Double Time. Our strategy was simple at the start, follow the big monohulls until we pass them, figuring that they all had the latest high tech weather gadgets. Following the crowd turned out to be our first mistake. Three hours after our start we had passed 297 of the 298 boats in the race. The wind hadn't shifted to the south; it was still from the northeast but kept getting lighter. Around 2:00 am the wind basically stopped. Not sailing a hot course downwind for the twelve hours was definitely our final mistake and ultimately cost us line honors. Into the late evening and night we raced towards a spectacular lightning show as the wind increased and shifted to the west. Then the wind hit us! I had just enough time to yell to my crewman who was on the helm to point the hulls downwind and keep them there or we would flip. The downdraft hit us at over a recorded 78 knots! My helmsman saw us race past 25 knots boat speed on the GPS. As we looked back we saw monohulls with spinnakers up broaching and jackknifing, trying to control their boats in the 35+ sustained winds and rain. We finished the race in 23rd position out of 299 starters. A Corsair 31R wasn't as fortunate and flipped. The crew on the trimaran was picked up in about 10 minutes. My crew and I look forward to the 2007 Chicago - Mac race as we are better prepared to face this grueling and challenging race. Story by Marty Foster. Photo by Bob Long.
